Startup finance roadmap showing four levels from data hygiene to capital strategy
Startup finance roadmap showing four levels from data hygiene to capital strategy

It’s Sunday at 9:00 PM.

You have three tabs open: LHV, Wise, and an Excel sheet that hasn't been updated since last month. You’re doing "napkin math"—trying to guess your runway before Monday morning meetings.

This is the ritual of a founder playing on "hard mode." You feel like you're working on finance, but you're actually just doing expensive data entry.

To scale, you need to stop checking your bank balance and start building a Survival Architecture. Here is how your finance stack should evolve from your first line of code to your Series B.

The golden rule: Every stage requires a different level of detail. Don't play Level 3 games on Level 1 time.

Pillar 1: Financial data (visibility & hygiene)

Where you are: Bootstrapped or pre-seed.
The vibe: "Is there money in the bank?"

At this stage, your biggest enemy isn't the tax man – it's fragmentation. You have cash in LHV, expenses on Revolut, and global payments in Wise. Because your data is scattered, you have "Zombie Spend" – subscriptions you forgot to cancel and "mental math" that is always 10% off.

  • Your only job: Keep it clean. Stop mixing personal and business expenses.

  • The evel-up sign: You can see your total cash position across all banks in one dashboard without opening a single CSV.

Level 2: The logic (unit economics)

Where you are: Seed stage.
The Vibe: "Does this business actually work?"

You’ve raised a Seed round. Now, investors don't care about your balance; they care about your machine. You need to prove that if they give you €1, you can turn it into €3.

  • The focus: You start tracking LTV (lifetime value) and CAC (customer acquisition Ccost). You begin the monthly ritual of budget vs. actuals – showing that you can actually stick to a plan.

  • The level-up sign: You know your "death date" (runway) and your CAC payback period by heart.

Level 3: The shield (compliance & reporting)

Where you are: Series A.
The vibe: "We are a real institution now."

Series A is the "professionalization" phase. The "boring" stuff now becomes a strategic shield that protects your valuation.

  • The focus: You aren't just reporting cash; you are undergoing annual audits and providing ESG (environmental, social, governance) reports to your institutional VCs. Your month-end close is a "pipe," not a project.

  • The level-up sign: You pass your first external audit without your lead investor finding a single "messy" transaction.

Level 4: The strategy (capital & treasury)

Where you are: Series B and veyond.
The vibe: "How do we optimize the millions we have?"

At this level, you have a CFO. Finance is no longer a back-office task; it’s a competitive advantage.

  • The focus: capital efficiency. You move idle seed/series cash into treasury yields to extend your runway by months. You start using venture debt or revenue-based financing to grow without further diluting your equity.

  • The level-up sign: Your finance team is generating "extra" runway through smart treasury management.

Where do you sit?

Most founders get stuck because they try to do Level 3 reporting (audits and ESG) while they still haven't solved Level 1 hygiene (Real-time data).

If you are still checking LHV and Wise manually every Sunday, you are at Level 1. Your goal shouldn't be a perfect Series B audit; your goal should be visibility.

Stop the manual labor. Build the foundation. Then scale the machine.

Visibo connects all your accounts — LHV, Revolut, Wise — and gives you real-time visibility from day one. Start free at visibo.io.
